CPR Scouting and Strategy Division
Our scouting and strategy teams work collaboratively to create a comprehensive approach to competition preparation and performance. The scouting team is instrumental in gathering crucial data on every team, tracking metrics from each match to inform strategic decisions. By creating a custom scouting app in August 2024, our team enhanced the data collection process, emphasizing reusability, a user-friendly interface, and scouter fatigue reduction. The app gathers event-specific data, such as field positions and timestamps, providing insights that shape our understanding of opposing teams and potential alliances. Meanwhile, the strategy team leverages this data by transforming it into actionable insights through Tableau. After denormalizing the data using Tableau Prep, students produce detailed reports and dashboards that support alliance selection, match strategy, and other analytical needs. Through these processes, students gain proficiency in data management and reporting, allowing them to respond swiftly to ad-hoc requests and meet real-time demands from the pit crew. Moving forward, the team aims to make all data and reports easily accessible to enhance pit crew efficiency and support informed decision-making throughout each competition.
Scouting
Our scouting team plays a valuable role in shaping our strategy. With effective scouting data, we enter matches well-informed about the strengths and strategies of our opponents and alliance partners, leading to improved collaboration and increased ranking points. By scouting matches and gathering key metrics, we prepare ourselves to work seamlessly with our alliance and anticipate our opponents' strategies.
Our students aim to scout every team in every match during competitions. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of other teams helps us formulate effective match strategies.
In August 2024, our team developed a scouting app from the ground up. We prioritized several key principles in its design and implementation, including code reusability, user-friendly interface, reduced scouter fatigue, and event-based data collection (e.g., field position, time).
Our focus is on gathering data that provides deep insights into other teams' capabilities. As our scouting team continues to develop and learn, so will our app, enhancing its data collection methods and features.
Strategy
Scouting data is only valuable when utilized effectively! Our strategy team converts the collected scouting data into Tableau reports and dashboards for match strategy, alliance selection, and various insights.
We start by normalizing our data for easy transmission, then use Tableau Prep to de-normalize it into detailed datasets for report creation in Tableau Desktop. Students not only become proficient in Tableau reporting but are also encouraged to share their findings and new insights with the team to enhance our overall performance.
Our Tableau Prep workflows are intricate, allowing students to learn dataset operations and how to manage large data sets to create targeted reports.
Students produce a standard set of reports and dashboards, while also becoming adept at responding quickly to ad-hoc requests with real-time reporting. Future goals include providing universal access to data and reports, along with timely updates for the pit crew.
